Waterlogged iPhone repair kit

1 waterlogged iPhone, 1 bag of rice, 1 ziplock bag, 1 pair of leopard print nylon anklets (on sale at Terrrget) and a whole lot of hope. Here goes.

Sent from my wife's iPhone.

And then I dropped my iPhone 3GS in the toilet...

No joke.

It happened this evening. We were all hungry so we pulled off at a nice little rest area down near the Colorado River. It was a nice spot with grass and trees, surrounded by mountains and streams. There was a nice breeze blowing and the temp was just right. We scarfed down the picnic sized meal my lovely wife had prepared and the kids went to play on the big toy in the park. I took a trip to the mens bathroom and squatted - a time to unload if you will - I then stood up to finish my paperwork and then I heard  *plop* - I quickly turned around to see my beloved 3 day old iPhone 3GS submerging into the terrrrrlet - it had slipped out of my shorts pocket.

In a matter of 2 seconds I yelled "NO!" right as a guy walked into to the stall next to me - the toilet lid slammed down and my pants fell to the floor. I wonder what that guy was thinking? No time to think about that. I quickly dove my right hand into the pot - not thinking of what I was sticking my hands into - just diving into to save a victim, my iPhone. It was under water for a good 2 seconds, maybe 3.

I wiped it off and looked at the screen which started to dim a little, then all of the pop up screens started popping up - "No SIM card..." "Enter your password for the iTunes store..." Charging is not supported..." and more. All of them stacking on top of each other. I walked out to find my wife and the kids. I think I said "This is bad." 5 or 6 times Rainman style as I walked toward her looking down at the phone. She said: "You're making me nervous" - I explained the situation and then ran to the car Napoleon Dynamite style, took out the SIM card, plugged in the iPhone to the car charger - (as if jolting it would be the equivalent of an iPod defribulator) and waited... It continued to fade out until it went black. I sat there stunned. My wife recalled the rice bag trick that our friend Phylicia had mentioned trying when she accidentally threw her iPhone into the washer. I looked around the small town we were next to and found nothing but a gas station and a Chinese restaurant...yes, a Chinese restaurant. However, I didn't storm the doors of this establishment for a bag of uncooked rice - in retrospect I'm not sure why. I instead went to the gas station, which of course, had nothing - not even a bag of Ramen. So we left that little town with a waterlogged iPhone and a frown.

For the last 4 hours of our first leg to Denver the iPhone would turn off and on, flickr, vibrate and then go back to black and then do it all over again. It reminded me of the movie Batteries Not Included.

We're here now in the hotel and I've got some response from the iPhone as I hooked it up to my computer. I'm going to to try and restore it and see what happens. It's the little iPhone that could and I hope that some time drying out will bring it out of it's coma.

Road Trippin'!

Tomorrow morning the family and I are heading out on a six week road trip. We'll be visiting friends and family along the way as we travel from Las Vegas to Denver to Omaha to Chicago to Grand Rapids to St. Louis to Oklahoma City to Angel Fire New Mexico and back to Vegas all within the confines of our Scion XB.

This will be our first cross country roadtrip as a family and I want to make it awesome for my kidsĀ  - I would love some feedback:

1. I'm looking for suggestions of places to visit along our path, even off the path as well as places to steer clear of.

2. I'm looking for car games you may have played with your family.

3. I'm looking for road trip soundtracks, suggestions with links would be appreciated.

Thanks!
